I spent a great birthday weekend exploring this island off of Seattle in
the Puget Sound. While you can quickly get there by a very very small plane
out of Seattle, I recommend the ferry unless you have a strong stomach.
The other advantage of the island is that you can easily catch a ride with
one of the locals or on the island bus called "The Turtle". There
are some beautiful bed and breakfast places to stay at, good restaurants,
hiking and sea kayaking, and local artists -- particularly there is a metal
sculptor who has some really impressive pieces.
